I Thought Personal Branding Was Cringe… I Was Wrong

I’ve been an entrepreneur for nine years, but I only started building my personal brand two years ago.

Not because I didn’t believe in it or see the value, but because I was worried about what people would think.

I didn’t want to come across as egotistical, like I was trying too hard, and I definitely didn’t want to feel cringe.

If I’m being honest, that hesitation cost me a lot of time and opportunity.

Because now, after two years of consistently building my personal brand, I can say this with full confidence…

It’s one of the highest leverage things I’ve ever done for my businesses.

The Lie Founders Tell Themselves About Personal Branding

I talk to founders, business owners, and leaders almost every single day.

The interesting thing is I almost never hear someone say, “I don’t think personal branding works.”

Instead, I hear things like:

  • “I just don’t want to put myself out there.”
  • “I hate being on camera.”
  • “I don’t want people to think I’m full of myself.”
  • “I don’t want my brand to be all about me.”

It’s never a strategy issue, but a perception one.

But here’s the question I started asking myself and now ask every founder I work with:

Are you more concerned about how you’re perceived… or the opportunities you’re leaving on the table?

Because whether you realize it or not, choosing not to build a personal brand is still a decision.

It’s just a decision to stay invisible.

Personal Branding Isn’t About Ego. It’s About Leverage.

This is the reframe that changed everything for me.

I didn’t wake up one day and decide I wanted to be an influencer. I’m not building a personal brand for attention. I’m building it for leverage.

In visibility, credibility, and trust.

Because there is no faster way to build trust at scale than putting a real person out front.

Why Faceless Brands Are Losing

We are living in a sea of logos and within an industry, they all pretty much blend together.

Same messaging, positioning, and generic content.

But when there’s a real founder, a real expert, a real person with a point of view?

That stands out. It’s memorable, trustworthy, and what people actually connect with.

I see this play out constantly, both as a marketer and as a buyer myself.

How Personal Brands Actually Influence Buying Decisions

I’ve made multiple buying decisions based on someone’s personal brand.

I hired an accounting team because the founder consistently shared content that made me feel more confident about my finances.

I chose an attorney because she showed up online, educated her audience, and made it incredibly clear how she could help.

In both cases, there were dozens of other options, but they were just logos.

These were real people, with a real POV out front that made all the difference.

It’s Cliché for a Reason…People Trust People

At the enterprise level, brand equity can carry a logo, but at the small to mid-sized business level?

People trust people.

If you want to differentiate in your market, this is one of the most powerful ways to do it.

While your competitors are hiding behind polished branding and generic messaging, you have the opportunity to show up with a voice, a perspective, and a personality.

That’s what wins.

What Changed When I Started Showing Up

When I finally committed to building my personal brand, everything shifted. Not overnight, but consistently over time.

I started getting:

  • Podcast invitations
  • Webinar opportunities
  • Speaking engagements
  • Direct inbound clients

Not just for my agency, but for my consulting and coaching work too.

I’ve had clients come back to work with us after a pause and specifically reference my content as the reason.

I’ve seen sales cycles shorten because people already trust me before we ever get on a call.

Maybe most importantly…I’ve been able to build something that extends beyond just one business.

Your Personal Brand Is an Asset

This is the part most founders miss.

Your personal brand isn’t just content. It’s not just visibility. It’s an asset.

It’s something you build once and leverage across everything:

  • Your current business
  • Future ventures
  • Partnerships
  • Investments
  • Opportunities you haven’t even thought about yet

I’m currently building across multiple entities, my marketing company, consulting work, and now acquiring a new business.

I can already see how my personal brand is going to fuel all of it.

Not because I’m posting for the sake of posting, but because I’m building something that creates ongoing opportunity.

The Hard Truth You Need to Hear

If you’re a founder sitting on the sidelines, and deep down you know that showing up more would help your business, but you’re still holding back because of fear, discomfort, or perception…

You’re not protecting your reputation. You’re limiting your opportunities.

That fear you feel? Every founder feels it. But the difference is whether you let it keep you invisible.

You Have Two Options

You can stay:

  • Invisible
  • Comfortable
  • Safe

Or you can choose to become:

  • Visible
  • Trusted
  • In demand

But you can’t have both.

I can tell you from experience…I’m really glad I chose visibility.
